The first edition of ‘Captives and Captive Management for Practitioners & Owners’, published in 2002 was a totally new book on captive insurance companies and was written by the author John Parkinson, sadly now deceased, very much from the practical viewpoint. The author spent over 20 years involved in the management of captives, overseeing the dramatic development in this business since 1975.Originally intended as a study course for those working in the business, including lawyers and accountants, where the end result will be a diploma in Captive Management awarded by Glasgow Caledonian University, the book was written to be of considerable interest to all those interested or involved in captives.Indeed the book proved to be a complete A to Z of the subject. It was written in a very readable form and designed to be of interest to anyone who wants to know more about the intricacies of the subject and wants a reference book handy. The aim was to produce something relating to the practice and principles of captive management, aspects standing the test of time and requiring the minimum of updates. The book was aimed at captives world-wide and it is intended to make the study course and examination available in all captive domiciles.Based on John’s work the second edition has been edited and produced by Bob Davidson, Dawn Anderson and Muhammad Shahid Nawaz of Glasgow Caledonian University. The spirit of John’s original work has been maintained and the book has been brought up to date to reflect the changes in Captives and Captive Management. The book has been produced by the publishers in a loose leaf format designed for study. The publishers undertake to circulate to purchasers of the book any periodic updates received from the editors over the next two years from the date of publishing.CONTENTS1 Overview, History and background2 Reasons for forming Captives3 The Feasibility Study4 Initial Decisions in Setting up a Captive5 Duties of the Management Company6 Operating Procedures7 Captive finance and Board Procedures8 Handling Different Classes of Insurance 9 Handling Uninsurable risk10 Reinsurance11 Captive Domiciles12 Association Joint Interest, Rent-a-Captive and Protected Cell Companies13 Tax aspects14 Miscellaneous Aspects
